What are Dental Implants?

Dental Implants are the new standard of care for tooth replacement. They are secured into the bone to provide permanent support for crowns and dentures. Dental implants look and feel like natural teeth and can last a lifetime.

Dental Implants are in the shape of cylinders, usually approximately a 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch in length, and are made of titanium. Approximately 3/4 of the cylinder is shaped like a screw, which holds the implant in the bone. The top portion of the implant is smooth, and this is what the abutment attaches to for placement of a crown or to secure a denture. The abutment (attachment) screws into the implant after the area has healed and is secure, so the restorative phase (crown or denture) can be completed.

Dr. Perkins has examples of implants for you to see and models to show how dental implants work. There are videos of what dental implants will do for patients and a simulated representation of how the implant is placed.
