Placement and Recovery for
Dental Implant Procedures

Records need to be taken before Dr. Perkins can proceed with your dental implant procedure. X-rays are essential to do a proper analysis of the underlying bone and gum tissue. Once it is determined that this is a good option for the patient, a surgical appointment can be set up.

Patients are usually treated under IV sedation by a Doctor who is residency trained in anesthesiology. He will monitor the well-being of the patient, while Dr. Perkins performs the surgical procedure. It is very important for our office to have our patients feel comfortable and free from anxiety while all procedures are being performed. There is a special surgical suite in the office for surgical procedures with a focus on aseptic technique and special care for our patients.

When the patient is comfortable, a pilot hole is made in the appropriate place in the jaw for the implant to be placed. The area is slowly widened to allow the implant to be placed. After placing the implant, the area is closed and the healing and integration process with the bone and implant take place. The time period for healing and osseointrgration takes anywhere from 3-6 months. Dr. Perkins uses his great skills and expertise when creating the pilot hole and sizing the bone in the patient’s jaw.

There are different factors to consider, when recovering from implant surgery, including the various procedures required to complete the restorative phase of your procedure. Diligent oral hygiene habits are necessary to ensure proper fusing of the bone and implant. If cared for properly, an implant can remain in place for more than 40 years.

There is minimal discomfort after the initial surgical procedure. There may be some swelling and minor bruising and bleeding from the procedure, but most patients will tell you how easy the procedure is. Dr. Perkins prescribes the necessary medications for discomfort and any antibiotics that are needed to ward off infection along with the guidelines you will follow for the next few days to ensure the success of your procedure.
